What is a Home Bar?

Home Bar

The term "Home Bar" means a large cabinet with bar top designed for entertaining and serving drinks in the home; has space to store beverages, bottles, glassware, and bar accessories.

If you are considering installing a bar within your home, then you have many types and styles of home bars to choose from. There are home bars that you can buy already pre-assembled that you then install in your home, or you can opt for a variety of portable bars or can even have a contractor custom design a home bar for you in the exact style and dimensions that you desire. Another option you can consider is that you can choose from home bars that are intended for indoor use and others intended for outdoor use, depending on what your preference is.

So, with all of the options in home bars that you have to choose from, how do you narrow down your choices?

Indoors or out:

One of the first things you need to decide when narrowing down your choices of home bars is whether the bar will be used indoors or out. While this decision may not drastically change the style of the bar, it will make a difference in the materials used to construct the bar. Home bars that are intended for outdoor use need to be made from materials that can withstand the elements of the weather. Outdoor home bars are also almost always portable rather than built in, so if you choose a portable model for outdoor use, you need to make sure it is sturdy and secure enough to stay put even when the wind begins to blow. One good thing about using portable home bars outdoors is that if the weather gets extremely severe or you live in a climate where the winters are harsh, you can fairly easily move your bar into a protected location, such as a garage or shed, to protect it from the weather when you need to.

Material choices:

When it comes to choosing materials for home bars, you have many options. Many built-in bars are constructed from wood, or a combination of wood and other materials to blend in best with the home's decor, including walls and floors. You can also purchase home bars in metal, aluminum, iron, glass, and many other materials, and for outdoor bars, you can get models that are made from resin and plastic composites that look like real wood or metal but that will hold up to the elements better.

Styles:

The number of styles available when it comes to home bars is virtually endless. There are very traditional styles, made from ornate wood and leather and there are very contemporary home bars. You can get styles that sit up against a wall and function more like a buffet server or you can get a full-fledged bar, complete with tap that makes you feel like you just stepped onto the set of "Cheers". Some home bars can accommodate bar stools in front, either high ones or low ones, and some are intended to just be stood around. There are some home bars that fold open to reveal storage for wine and other alcoholic drinks, some that have multi levels to make the design more interesting and contemporary, and some that look more like another piece of furniture (such as a bookshelf or a steamer trunk) than they do a bar.

When it comes to choosing a bar for your home, there are numerous options in design, material choices, size, shape and style, so you should be able to choose the best style of home bar that will accommodate all of your needs and desires.
